These days, the idea of “sober curious” is everywhere, and for good reason! People are starting to rethink alcohol. Not because they need to, but because they want to, which is totally powerful in itself. Mindful drinking has become part of a wellness conversation, reshaping culture from bars and brunches to parties and everyday life.
Across generations, especially younger folk like Gen X, there’s a huge shift. Now, it’s all about drinks that feel flavorful, inclusive, and intentional. Though this time, it comes without the hangover or extra calories. Stay with me and learn why it’s time to get curious about being sober curious!

Sober Curious Drinks: Sip Intentionally Without the Hangover
I’ve been alcohol-free for 4 YEARS now, which you can hear about in my podcast episode, “Top Reasons Why My Life Is Better Without Alcohol,” and I honestly believe it changed my life. This is also why I wholeheartedly believe that the sober curious lifestyle matters. People want drinks that feel social, sophisticated, engaging, and enjoyable, without feeling sick, exhausted, and defeated the next day. Gone are the days when “non-alcoholic” meant plain soda or juice that gives you no enjoyment and makes you feel like a child—or left out.
Today, sober curious drinks offer complex flavor profiles, pretty presentations, and a shared experience, just like traditional alcoholic cocktails. People are asking for beverages that work in social moments, brunches, celebrations, or even casual evenings with friends. You can even add a “healthy buzz” with ingredients like adaptogens, botanicals, herbal infusions, and kombucha.
If you’re ready to know more, this post will walk you through what sober curious means, why it’s trending, and how you can enjoy it yourself!
What Is Sober Curious?
Sober curious is a lifestyle choice where people consciously reduce or eliminate alcohol. This is done in an effort to prioritize mental clarity, social presence, and wellness. It’s not labeling yourself as an alcoholic or claiming to be in recovery. Instead, it’s about mindfully choosing what you consume and dedicate your energy to. In fact, people usually dip in and out, exploring Dry January and Sober October challenges—or simply reducing how often they drink alcohol.
This approach has become popular because of a cultural shift toward health, inclusivity, and functional beverages. Social media communities celebrate sober curiosity rather than stigmatize it. Influencers, online forums, and approachable non-alcoholic drink brands have made it stylish, fun, and approachable. And like I said before, NO HANGOVER!
I spoke a lot about this during Episode 114 of my podcast with Laura Elorza. She blends hypnotic techniques, journaling, and movement practices to help change relationships with alcohol, without the shame or pressure to be perfect. Hearing her share her knowledge seriously changed my perspective.
The Difference Between Sober Curious and Teetotal
Sober curious is about choice and curiosity, not obligation. It’s typically short-term or situational, focused on wellness and social enjoyment. Teetotal, on the other hand, is a complete, lifelong abstinence, often for personal, spiritual, or religious reasons. The sober curious lifestyle offers flexibility without judgment.
Where Did Sober Curious Come From?
The concept of sober curious comes from a mix of wellness culture, mindful drinking, and recovery-adjacent communities. People wanted health-conscious options that didn’t make them feel socially left out. Brands experimenting with zero-proof spirits, social media influencers, and challenges like Dry January helped bring it into mainstream awareness.
When Did the Sober Curious Lifestyle Start?
Okay, so when did this become a thing?
- Pre-2020: Early seeds in the mindful drinking community and wellness-focused experimentation
- Pandemic era: Interest surged in health, home experiments, and digital sober communities
- Post-2020: With more people aware of their health after the pandemic, there was an explosion of non-alcoholic spirits brands, social media normalization, and growth in Dry January participation
Cultural visibility came from influencer content, social media campaigns, and launches of sophisticated non-alcoholic lines. As a result, it makes sober curiosity both trendful and approachable!
How Are People Adapting to Sober Curious Trends?
Restaurants and Bars Changing Beverages
Many restaurants and bars are now offering creative, mixologist-level mocktails and zero-proof options to appeal to the sober curious crowd. This makes going alcohol-free feel inclusive and not like “missing out.”
Social Media and Trend Influence
Social influences, like Dry January and influencer content, are now normalizing alcohol-free options. Non-alcoholic drinks are now mainstream, stylish, and even trendy to order or serve. As a result, choosing not to drink is seen as a lifestyle choice rather than a limitation.
Functional Drink Ingredients
Functional ingredients like adaptogens, botanicals, kombucha, and herbal infusions are now being added to drinks. These ingredients create non-alcoholic beverages that feel wellness-oriented, flavorful, and social all in one!
Consumers Embracing Non-Alcoholic Options
Brands such as Lyre’s, Seedlip, and Ritual Zero Proof now experiment with zero-proof spirits to create familiar cocktail experiences without alcohol. Together, this shift highlights how consumers are prioritizing choice, inclusivity, and experience.
In fact, I really love the earthy flavors Seedlip features, especially Garden 108. It’s so good if adding herbs to your mocktails is your thing!

Best Sober Curious Drinks
Interested in trying some sober curious drinks at home? Here are some ideas to start followed by easy, step-by-step recipes!
Spiced Old Fashion
A Spiced Old Fashion Mocktail is just as sophisticated, classy, and cozy—minus the bloating and hangovers! And depending on what you use to make it, it can also offer digestive support, blood sugar management, antioxidants, and better hydration.
Ingredients:
- 2–3 oz Curious Elixir’s Curious No. 5
- ½ oz fresh orange juice (or express an orange peel to make it less sweet)
- ¼ oz maple syrup or simple syrup
- 2 dashes non-alcoholic aromatic bitters
- Optional: orange peel for garnish and a cinnamon stick for extra spice
Instructions:
- Step 1: Fill a rocks glass with ice. The funkier the glass, the better!
- Step 2: Add your Curious No. 5 and orange juice (or expressed peel). If you want a touch of sweetness, don’t forget your maple or simple syrup.
- Step 3: Add your bitters. Stir gently to combine all of those smoky, warm, rich flavors.
- Step 4: Garnish with an orange peel or cinnamon stick.
- Step 5: Sip slowly and enjoy!
Would you believe me if I told you the flavor isn’t even the best part of Elixir No. 5? It contains elderberry and ginger for immunity and stress-relief, and shatavari to balance hormones, serotonin, and restore balance. A drink that tastes good and benefits you!
Modern Mule
A Modern Mule Mocktail is tart, zesty, and super refreshing, making it perfect for brunch, casual afternoons, or anytime you want something bright and fun. It’s crisp and energizing, while being an easy crowd-pleaser. Personally, I find that Seedlip or Lyre’s spirits provide a cool, botanical base that mimics a “traditional” mule perfectly. But Ritual Zero Proof is another fantastic alternative.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz non-alcohol spirit of your choice (a vodka substitute works best, but Ritual Zero Proof Gin Alternative works too!)
- ½ oz fresh lime juice
- 4-5 oz non-alcoholic ginger beer
- Ice
- Optional: Lime wedge or fresh mint for garnish
Instructions:
- Step 1: Fill a tall glass or copper mug with ice.
- Step 2: Add your non-alcoholic spirit and fresh lime juice. Give just a couple gentle stirs.
- Step 3: Top with ginger beer and stir again gently.
- Step 4: Garnish with a lime wedge or mint. Or, do both! You can personalize it however you’d like.
- Step 5: Sip and enjoy the zingy, refreshing kick!
Desert Margarita
A Desert Margarita is festive, tart, and made for celebrations and outdoor gatherings. It brings all the classic margs vibes without the post-party regret. Even for those of you who aren’t the biggest fans of tequila, the alcohol-free alternative from Lyre’s is smooth and earthy. Combining citrus, agave, and peppery spice, it’s as warm as it is refreshing.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz Lyre’s alcohol-free tequila alternative
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- ½ oz agave syrup
- Splash of orange juice
- Ice
- Optional: Salt or tajin for the rim
Instructions:
- Step 1: Rim your glass with salt or tajin.
- Step 2: Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. If you don’t have a shaker, don’t worry! Just gently stir it together with a spoon.
- Step 3: Grab another glass, hold the ice back, and pour your drink in.
- Step 4: Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy.
Pomegranate Fizz
If a party is in the cards, a pomegranate fizz should be too! This one is perfect whether you’re hosting a celebration or simply want something refreshing. With a tangy twist, not-too-sweet profile, and just the right amount of sophistication, every sip feels light and exciting.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz pomegranate juice
- 1.2 oz fresh lemon juice
- 3-4 oz sparkling water or non-alcoholic prosecco
- Ice
- Optional: Pomegranate seeds or rosemary sprig for garnish
Instructions:
- Step 1: Fill a wine glass or coupe with ice.
- Step 2: Add the pomegranate juice and lemon juice. If you want, you can also take a little sip to see how you like the flavors! This way, you can add more now if you need to.
- Step 3: Top with sparkling water or alcohol-free prosecco. If you do choose to opt for non-alcoholic prosecco, I highly recommend Lyre’s Clasico! It’s fresh, sophisticated, and perfectly dry.
- Step 4: Stir gently to combine.
- Step 5: Garnish and sip slowly.
Classic Paloma-Style Mocktail
Palomas are notorious for their refreshing feel and bright sips. The grapefruit, the lime, the gentle sweetness—it’s a classic for a reason! And with Little Saint’s Non-Alcoholic Paloma (my favorite flavor!), you can have all the fun without any of the regret.
Ingredients:
- 1 can Little Saints Non-Alcoholic Paloma Cocktail
- Fresh lime wedge
- Pinch of sea salt
- Optional: grapefruit slice for garnish
Instructions:
- Step 1: Grab your favorite glass and add in a few pieces of ice. If you don’t want the ice, you can just use this step to stir and cool.
- Step 2: Pour in your non-alcoholic Paloma cocktail and gently stir it.
- Step 3: If you’re a fan of the ice, keep it in and add a pinch of sea salt! If you’re not, grab a second glass, hold the ice back, pour the drink in, and sprinkle in your salt.
- Step 4: Garnish with your grapefruit slice and enjoy!

Tips for Making Sober Curious Drinks at Home
Balance Sweetness, Texture, and Acidity
One of the most exciting things about trying sober curious drinks at home is being able to experiment. Try using citrus, herbs, or bitters to mimic cocktails without the alcohol. The more you experiment, the more options you have for winding down and relaxing!
Experiment with Flavor
Never shy away from experimenting with flavors. Do you enjoy lemon and grapefruit? Mix them together and see how you like the combination! The fun part is that you can combine sparkling water, fruit juices, and alcohol-free spirits for layers of flavor.
