Switching to a clean beauty routine is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. However… that can be easier said than done.

Suddenly, you’re reading ingredient lists you can’t pronounce, and every product is labeled “clean” but somehow means something different. It’s… a lot. And if you’ve ever stood in your bathroom thinking, “Do I need to throw everything out and start again?” you’re not alone. I’ve been there.

But here’s the thing… you don’t need to overhaul your entire routine overnight. Honestly, I’d recommend that you don’t! Starting a clean beauty routine is less about perfection and more about paying attention. Focus on what your skin likes, which ingredients you feel good using, and what’s actually worth upgrading. Think of it as more of a slow swap, not a dramatic detox.

Change can be hard, especially if you’re not sure what to change. That’s why in this guide, I’ll walk you through how to start a clean beauty routine without the overwhelm. I’ll discuss what to change first, what’s worth paying attention to, and how to build a routine that feels good (and doable) in the long term.

How to Start a Clean Beauty Routine That Works for You

How to Start a Clean Beauty Routine That Works for You

Clean beauty isn’t just a trend… it’s more of a shift in how you think about what you’re using every day. More specifically, you truly start noticing things you’ve never really paid much mind to. What’s in your products, how your skin reacts, why something works… or doesn’t. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

But here’s the part I think gets missed: you don’t have to overcomplicate it. It’s not about analyzing every single ingredient or throwing out half your bathroom. It’s just about paying a little more attention, simplifying where you can, and choosing products that genuinely suit your skin (not just what TikTok says you need this week).

And weirdly, that’s where the shift happens. You stop second-guessing everything. You feel more confident in what you’re using. It becomes less “am I doing this right?” and more “this actually works for me.”

I chatted about this in “Ep. 123 – The Truth About Clean Beauty With Crunchi Founders Kelly Kreusler & Melanie Petschke.” They really emphasized how knowing what’s in your products gives you a sense of control and confidence. And, honestly, I think it’s an incredibly beneficial listen for anyone on the same journey!

What Is Clean Beauty?

Clean beauty refers to cosmetic or skincare products that prioritize natural, ethically sourced ingredients, transparency, and consumer safety, typically avoiding harsh, harmful chemicals. Beyond that, clean beauty is also a lifestyle. It’s not an obsessed, read-every-label-for-hours kind of lifestyle… but a “Hey, I actually want to know what this is and why I’m using it” adjustment. Because if you’ve ever picked up a product, flipped it over, and thought I have absolutely no idea what any of this means… you’ll get it.

That’s where clean beauty starts to feel different. You simply begin by choosing products with ingredients you recognize (or at least understand). At the same time, you also skip random fillers your skin doesn’t need. And that means you pay attention to what works for you rather than relying on what’s trending. (Guilty! Aren’t we all?)

And the transparency part is HUGE. When you know what you’re using, it’s so much easier to trust your routine and stop second-guessing every little thing. But remember, this isn’t about picking it up and getting it perfect straight away. You don’t need to replace everything overnight or have a “perfectly clean” routine to do this well. It’s just small, smarter swaps over time—but the kind that actually sticks.

I touched on this in “Ep. 118 – Facial Acupuncture, Buccal Massage and More”… We ended up talking a lot about how your skin responds when you combine those mindful choices with consistency. And that’s really the important part. It’s not about one miracle product; it’s the way everything adds up over time.

Benefits of Clean Beauty Routine

Reduces Exposure to Potential Irritants

Remember earlier when I said that you won’t be able to unsee ingredients? You’ll quickly realize how true this is. Most of us don’t have a real idea of what’s in our skincare and makeup products… and that may be the problem.

Unfortunately, many brands use synthetic fragrances, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and even formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Our skin is our largest organ, so whatever we put on it can be absorbed into the body. That’s not just harmful to our skin… that’s harmful to our health

A clean beauty routine helps eliminate our exposure to these potential irritants and chemicals. Mindful, intentional brands prioritize alternatives such as plant-based, skin-friendly ingredients, shorter ingredient lists, and cleaner formulas. And that’s something everything from our hormones to our health will thank us for.

Can Improve Sensitivity and Long-Term Skin Balance

If you’ve ever had a product randomly sting, break you out, or just feel odd on your skin, there’s usually a reason. A lot of conventional products are packed with fragrances or preservatives that don’t agree with everyone. And while they’re not “bad” across the board, they can be a lot for sensitive skin.

Switching to cleaner options can take some of that pressure off. Things feel calmer and more predictable, and you’re not constantly playing the guessing game of: what caused that reaction?

Supports Skin Barrier Health

One of the first things people notice when they switch to cleaner products is that their skin just feels less reactive. Not perfect overnight, of course, but calmer.

When you’re not constantly layering on harsh or unnecessary ingredients, your skin can actually do its job properly. Hydrate, repair, regulate itself… all the things it’s meant to do. And over time, that’s when you start to see a difference. Think: smoother texture, reduced redness, and that “My skin just looks healthier” kind of glow.

Encourages Mindful Consumption

Something interesting happens when you start paying attention to your skincare… It kind of spills into everything else. You start questioning what you’re buying, what you actually need, what’s worth it, and what’s just noise. It’s not about being extreme; it just makes you a bit more thoughtful in your decisions.

And that mindset shift? It sticks. It helps your skin find its balance again. When you stick with products that support your skin (instead of constantly switching or overloading it), things start to even out. Oil production, hydration, sensitivity… it all becomes a bit more stable.

It’s very similar to learning how to rewire your brain. Once you become aware of your habits, you start making small, intentional changes that make a lasting, impactful difference.

Simplifies Routines With More Intentional Products

This is honestly one of my favorite parts. A clean beauty routine encourages you to stop feeling like you need ten different serums to “fix” everything. Instead, you start focusing on a few products that actually do what they say they will. Less clutter. Less confusion. And way more consistency, which, let’s be real, is usually the missing piece.

I talked about this in “Ep. 97 – Simple Non-Toxic Swaps For Your Home and Lifestyle.” While the topic may differ, the principle still stands: start with what matters most, not what’s trending.

How to Build a Clean Skincare Routine

How to Build a Clean Skincare Routine

Get started with the basics.

If you’re starting fresh, keep it simple: cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and maybe retinoids and vitamin C serum if your skin can tolerate those. That’s it. I know it’s tempting to add in all the extras (the serums, the treatments, the “this will change your life” products online)…

However, a solid foundation will do more for your skin than a crowded routine ever will. And honestly, it saves your brain a bit, too. Less decision fatigue, less second-guessing… just a routine you can actually stick to.

Make sure to prioritize high-impact product swaps.

You don’t need to replace everything at once, but where you start does matter. Think about the products you’re using every single day. Maybe it’s a shampoo scrub, a tinted sunscreen, or a face oil.

Those are the ones sitting on your skin the most, so they’re a great place to begin.

Introduce products gently over time.

This is where a lot of people go wrong. They get excited, buy a whole new routine, switch everything over, and then their skin freaks out. And suddenly you have no idea which product caused it.

Slow it down. Introduce one product at a time, give your skin a minute to respond, and go from there. It’s not as exciting… but it works.

Choose ingredients based on your individual skin type.

Not every “clean” product is right for everyone—we’re all unique! If your skin is dry, you’ll want ingredients that actually hydrate (like hyaluronic acid). If you’re more on the oily side, something like niacinamide can help balance things out.

And if you’re sensitive, gentle, soothing ingredients are your best friend. It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget when everything is marketed as “good for all skin types.”

Patch test before you fully commit to applying it.

I know, no one wants to do this. But even clean products can cause reactions; it just depends on your skin. A quick patch test (somewhere small and out of the way) is one of those non-negotiable, essential steps. It can save you a full-face reaction later… which is never fun.

Test the product on your wrist, near your ear, or on the back of your leg. Remain consistent, give it time, and see how your skin reacts as you go. Think of it as a tiny bit of effort now, for a lot less drama later.

Keep your routine simple and consistent.

This is the part that actually makes the difference. Not the fancy products. Not the trends. Just consistency. When you give your skin a routine and actually stick to it, that’s when things start to improve. It might feel a bit boring at first, especially if you’re used to trying new things all the time, but I promise it works.

Ep. 95 – Keeping Your Health and Fitness Philosophy Simple and Effective with Sarah Fisher” is such a good reminder of this. Simplicity isn’t lazy… it’s usually what gets the best results.

Clean Beauty Swaps

Conventional Cleanser → Gentle Sulfate-Free Cleanser

If your skin ever feels tight after washing your face… that’s not actually a good sign. (Even though we’ve all been told it is at some point!) A lot of cleansers are just too harsh. Switching to something gentler makes a difference pretty quickly. It won’t be a dramatic, overnight difference. But it will be enough that you notice your skin isn’t constantly trying to bounce back.

Hair Styling Products → Plant-Based or Non-Toxic Alternatives

Hair products are easy to forget about, but they sit on your scalp all day. If yours leaves buildup or makes your hair feel stiff, switching to something lighter can help. Plus, they tend to smell better, which is a small but underrated bonus!

Sunscreen → Mineral-Based SPF

If sunscreen has ever made your skin sting or break out, it could be because you’re using a chemical sunscreen. Mineral SPFs tend to be a bit more forgiving, especially if you’re sensitive. And they’ve come a long way! They’re not as thick or chalky as they used to be, which is a relief.

Foundation → Lightweight, Non-Comedogenic Alternative

Not everyone needs to change their foundation, but if yours feels heavy, sits weirdly, or breaks you out… it might be worth looking at. Lighter formulas still give you coverage, just without that “my skin can’t breathe” feeling by the end of the day. It’s a subtle shift, but you definitely notice it.

Shampoo and Conditioner → Sulfate-Free, Silicone-Free Formulas

Hair can be a bit of a transition, I won’t lie. If you’ve been using conventional products for years, switching to sulfate-free can feel different at first. But once your scalp adjusts, your hair usually feels lighter and less coated. It’s one of those “trust the process” situations, but in my experience, it always pays off.

Deodorant → Aluminum-Free Options

Okay, this is one that people tend to side-eye a bit. Some natural deodorants don’t work for everyone straight away. But if you find one that suits you, it’s actually a really easy swap. There can be a short adjustment period, and that’s when people usually give up and resort to their previous product. However, give it a little time, and you may be pleasantly surprised!

Lip Balm → Clean, Toxin-Free Options

This one surprised me the most, honestly. Some lip balms feel good when you first put them on… and then you’re reapplying 20 minutes later. There’s actually a reason for that! Some brands use ingredients like menthol or camphor, which actually lead to a “drying” cycle. Sneaky, but it clearly works! Cleaner options tend to actually hydrate your lips rather than coat them. This way, you’re not constantly reapplying—your product just… does its job.

Moisturizer → Fragrance-Free, Barrier-Supporting Formula

This one’s a game changer. You don’t always realize a moisturizer is irritating your skin until you switch to one that doesn’t. And, a lot of the time, fragrance is the culprit. It smells nice, but your skin doesn’t really need it. Once you go for something more barrier-focused, things start to feel a bit more stable… less up and down.

Makeup Remover → Gentle, Plant-Based Oils or Micellar Water

If removing your makeup feels like a chore, you’re probably using the wrong product. Don’t get me wrong… nobody really loves the process of makeup removal! However, it should feel like a relaxing part of your routine, not something you know will irritate your skin later. More specifically… It shouldn’t sting or leave your skin feeling stripped. Oils or micellar water just make removal easier, and they tend to be more forgiving on even sensitive skin.

A clean beauty routine doesn’t have to be complicated or intimidating…

Switching to clean beauty products is really about small, intentional steps. You start with what matters, swap intentionally, and pay attention to how your skin types respond. Over time, consistency transforms both your skin and your confidence.
